- equilibrium- this is when the story is "normal", everyone is carrying out normal tasks, for example a family eating breakfast all together.
- disruption- this is when something happens to cause enigmas (problems)
- resolution- all the enigmas get sorted out
- new equilibrium- this is different from the previous equilibrium because of the changes caused by the disruption
